NPPN Webinar Historic Sites and Sea Level Rise: Be Part of a New Project
November 16, 2022 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EST
The impacts of sea level rise (SLR) and its elevation of the groundwater will be catastrophic for many Low Elevation Coastal Communities (LECC) and their cultural heritage. Whether it is due to increased flooding of subsurface spaces, surface flooding due to reduced discharge of precipitation, or exacerbated tidal surges during extreme weather events, the impacts of the elevation of groundwater levels will precede permanent inundation or submergence by decades.
The Campaign for Historic Trades started a project to create a consortium of coastal heritage sites with networked water level monitoring stations to study the impacts that the elevation and salinization of the groundwater will have on coastal historic structures and sites. Data derived from the network will provide site-specific information concerning the deterioration of historic building materials, data driven contextualization for the education of site visitors, and the foundation for a storm surge early warning system. Learn more about this new project and how your organization can be part of the consortium.
